When Michelle wrote her Advanced Directives, preparing her own end-of-life wishes, she chose an open-air cremation as her first choice of disposition. The method appealed to her because she valued the idea of disintegrating into the air, surrounded by her close community.
Despite open-air cremation being a beautiful ceremony with no exposure of the body, Michelle knew the experience might be too raw for her father, a Jewish holocaust survivor, should she pass prior to him. So Michelle decided to include a note stating: “…Should my father outlive me, my primary choice would be green burial instead”. A choice which has closer resemblance to conventional as well as Jewish disposition.
